Em 1861, o médico francês Prósper Ménière, publicou uma série de documentos nos quais descreveu um grupo de doentes que apresentavam vertigens, acufenos, surdez neurossensorial e sensação de plenitude auricular. Até então o conhecimento sobre estes sintomas era escasso e baseado em crenças populares, assente muitas vezes em premissas falsas ou atribuídos a patologias incorretamente diagnosticadas. Com esta publicação, o médico reconheceu que o ouvido seria o local de origem destes sintomas e que a fisiopatologia inerente seria comum a todos, sugerindo a existência de uma nova entidade clínica que daí para a frente passou a ser conhecida como “doença de Ménière”.
Com o passar dos anos, esta patologia começou a ganhar o interesse e a atenção da comunidade médica e paulatinamente foram aparecendo novos estudos e descobertas. A fisiopatologia e a etiologia da doença desde cedo intrigaram os cientistas e presentemente ainda são temas de discussão, motivo pelo qual também ainda não existe uma terapêutica dirigida e eficaz, nem se sabe aplicar correctamente todas as terapêuticas disponíveis, sejam médicas ou cirúrgicas.
Continuam a ser feitas investigações para aumentar o conhecimento sobre esta patologia e saber qual a melhor estratégia para acompanhar e tratar estes pacientes, havendo ensaios clínicos a decorrer com terapêuticas promissoras.
In the year of 1861, French doctor Prósper Ménière, published a series of papers in which he described a group of patients with vertigo, tinnitus, sensorineural deafness and aural fullness. Until then the knowledge about these symptoms was narrow and based on popular beliefs, false premises or attributed to wrong diagnosed pathologies. With these papers, the doctor recognized that inner ear would be the place of origin of these symptoms and that the underlying pathophysiology would be common to all of them, suggesting the existence of a new clinical entity from then on known as “Ménière’s disease”. Over the years, this pathology started to earn interest and attention from the medical community and gradually new studies and discoveries started to show up. The pathophysiology and the etiology of the disease since early intrigued the scientists and are still discussion topics nowadays, therefore, there is still no directed and effective therapeutic, neither we know how to correctly apply all the available therapeutics, either medical or surgical. Researches are still going on to increase the knowledge about this entity and to know what’s the best strategy to follow and treat these patients, with ongoing clinical trials with promising treatments.
