This master’s dissertation settled on a scientifically based investigation, has as main themes the military heritage and sustainable rehabilitation as a method to keep the built heritage’s identity, as such, it aims to deepen and develop knowledge about sustainability and rehabilitation of the military heritage that is in transition in 21st century society, developing from there a methodology for the sustainable rehabilitation of this type of building. The rethinking of the role and weight of the military institution in contemporary society resulted in the loss of use of its heritage, leading to its degradation. In this context, in order to make a sustainable preservation of its heritage value and utility for society, the State opened the oportunity for part of these properties to be reclassified and, as such, reinserted in the city. At a time when rehabilitation issues are increasingly approaching the environmental issue as heritage is progressively valued and preserved, the objective of this master’s dissertation is to meet these two important factors by creating a method that suits the specificity and formal constructive and funcional characteristics of these specific spaces (military), as well as the constraints of their heritage classification that make rehabilitation operations complex, while maintaining their identity even when they are adapted to other uses. In an attempt to simplify the steps to be taken in such a complex rehabilitation process, it was developed based on the study of various aspects of rehabilitation, sustainability and heritage, a method based on a checklist divided by the different phases of the rehabilitation process and in turn subdivided into actions to be taken in different contexts. Given that the military barracks typology embodies the essence of the Military Heritage identity, this checklist was tested in a studied example that is the Quartel de Regimento de Lanceiro n°2 located next to Calçada da Ajuda in Lisbon.
