Abstract(s)
Although the Ottoman Empire and its successor, the Republic of Turkey, are closely linked to European history and politics, they are not an integral part of Europe in the eyes of many Europeans. From the outset, Turkey's aspirations to join the European Union (EU) have sparked controversy. Discussions have focused on a number of institutional, political, cultural, religious, geographical and economic reasons. Turkey's accession process has been lengthy and complex, and it does not appear to be resolved soon. This study aims to analyse the behaviour of the historical-political and legal relations between Turkey and Europe, from the 19th century to the present day, in order to understand the emergence of Turkey's application for EU membership and the EU's decision to officially open accession negotiations with Turkey. Also, it requires identifying the elements that are conditioning or favouring the Turkish application and epiloguing on the future prospect of Turkey's accession or not to the EU.
