(1992; 1994; 1999), o O’Leary Porter Scale (Porter, & O’Leary, 1980; versão portuguesa
de Pedro, & Francisco, 2014), o Inventário de Coping Diádico (Bodenmann, 2008; versão
portuguesa de Vedes, Nussbeck, Bodenmann, Lind. & Ferreira, 2013), e o Child
Behaviour Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach 1991a; versão portuguesa de Fonseca, Simões,
Rebelo, Ferreira, & Cardoso, 1994) e o Youth Self-Report (YSR; Achenbach, 1991b;
presente.
In the last decades, literature has shown growing interest in the impact of families’ economic pressure on adolescents’ emotional (mal)adjustment. Considering the socioeconomic context that presently characterizes Portugal, and given the lack of research concerning the role of the couples’ dyadic coping in the relationship between economic pressure and adolescents’ (mal)adjustment, the goal of the present study was to analyze the mediating role of marital conflict and negative dyadic coping in the relationship between economic pressure (can’t make ends meet; trouble saving money; economic adjustments and financial worries) and the adolescents’ internalizing and externalizing symptoms reported by the parents and adolescents. The sample included 213 Portuguese married or cohabitant couples with at least one children aged between 12 and 21 years old. Participants fulfilled a Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, an Economic Pressure Questionnaire adapted from Conger et al. (1992; 1994; 1999), the Portuguese version of O’Leary Porter Scale (Porter, & O’Leary 1980; Portuguese version by Pedro, & Francisco, 2014), the Dyadic Coping Inventory (Bodenmann, 2008; Portuguese version by Vedes, Nussbeck, Bodenmann, Lind, & Ferreira, 2013), and the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach, 1991a; Portuguese version by Fonseca, Simões, Rebelo, Ferreira, & Cardoso, 1994) and the Youth Self-Report (YSR; Achenbach, 1991b; Portuguese version by Fonseca, & Monteiro, 1999). Results were consistent with previous studies, showing an indirect pathway between economic pressure and adolescents’ emotional (mal)adjustment (self-reported and reported by the parents) mediated by parents’ marital conflict, but not by negative dyadic coping. Marital conflict was negatively associated with negative dyadic coping, and positively related to adolescents’ emotional (mal)adjustment. No significant direct effects were found between negative dyadic coping and adolescents emotional (mal)adjustment, nor between economic pressure and emotional (mal)adjustment. Also, no significant differences were found on the mean scores between men and women. Implications of these results are discussed in the present work.
