This study aspires to investigate the major determinants and strategies of the portuguese direct investment in Mozambique, having in mind that even though Mozambique being a poor country, it has exercised a certain attraction amongst international investors in the last years. Using interviews and inquires made to the portuguese companies that possess investment in Mozambique, we verified that the major determinants to the investments were in associating the possibility of increase in the volume of businesses to the search for new markets, the political and economical stability present in the country and also with historical affinities and cultural proximities between this country and Portugal. In terms of strategy, we verified that the investment passes, either acquisition of companies, induced by the privatization process, or by the creation from root of companies. From this we were taken to conclude that, because of the available capacity of the portuguese companies and the consequent search for new markets, Mozambique appeared as a natural destiny of the portuguese direct investment, representing a kind of extension of the national market, as consequence of its political stability and the historical ties that unite this country and Portugal. The privatizations process in Mozambique simply made this movement easier.
