entrevistas semiestruturadas a 11 crianças e jovens, maioritariamente do sexo masculino,
envolvimento neste.
Children and young people living in foster care may have traumatic life experiences and the impact of these bring serious risks to their emotional and intellectual development. Therefore, this population shows higher rates of emotional, social, cognitive and educational problems or disorders. The Wave by Wave program is a surf therapy intervention directed to youth living in residential care that aims the promotion of physical and mental health and resilience. This program combines the practice of surf with a psychological group intervention, administered weekly , during the school term. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 children and young people, mostly male, aged between 8 and 19 years old. The aim was to identify the participants’ coping strategies and the program’s contribution to their acquisition, as to understand the participants’ perceptions about positive and negative aspects of the program and the facilitators and obstacles in its involvement. Aquatic activities, as well as relational aspects, were the factors that better worked as facilitators. Results also suggest that there was a contribution of the program to the well-being and the promotion of the affective relationships’ of these children and young people. Furthermore, there was no evidence of an impact on the acquisition of coping strategies. For further investigations, it is suggested to integrate the perspective of the participants’ educators, for a better comprehension of the program’s impact, as well as an evaluation throughout the program, in order to better understand the perception regarding the evolution of the facilitators and obstacles.
