| dc.description.abstract | A chegada de Vasco da Gama à Índia em 1498 iniciou um processo de estabelecimento português no espaço do subcontinente indiano que só terminaria em 1961. Apoiado por um vasto conjunto de fortificações que foram acompanhando a evolução da poliorcética, a presença portuguesa passou de um estabelecimento pontual em pontos-chave ao longo da costa ocidental da Índia, para um domínio territorial em algumas áreas específicas, até ser forçado a uma reorganização na segunda metade do século XVIII, fruto das vastas perdas territoriais sofridas. A presença de estruturas fortificadas de origem portuguesa na maioria destes territórios patenteia a enorme importância que as mesmas tiveram na construção do império português no Oriente. O presente ensaio pretende dar uma panorâmica geral da evolução das fortificações portuguesas na Índia e no Sri Lanka, apoiando-se também num conjunto de investigações desenvolvidas por diversos autores. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Vasco da Gama’s arrival in India in 1498 began a process of Portuguese settlement in the Indian subcontinent that would only end in 1961. Supported by a vast array of fortifications that accompanied the evolution of the poliorcetic, the Portuguese presence went from the establishment at key points along the west coast of India to territorial dominance in a few specific areas, until it was forced to reorganise in the second half of the 18th century as a result of the vast territorial losses suffered. The presence of fortified structures of Portuguese origin in most of these territories shows the enormous importance they played in building the Portuguese empire in the East. The aim of this essay is to provide a general overview of the evolution of Portuguese fortifications in India and Sri Lanka, based on a series of studies carried out by several authors. | pt_PT |
