Abstract(s)
Vasco da Gama’s arrival in India in 1498 began a process of Portuguese settlement in the Indian subcontinent that would only end in 1961. Supported by a vast array of fortifications that accompanied the evolution of the poliorcetic, the Portuguese presence went from the establishment at key points along the west coast of India to territorial dominance in a few specific areas, until it was forced to reorganise in the second half of the 18th century as a result of the vast territorial losses suffered. The presence of fortified structures of Portuguese origin in most of these territories shows the enormous importance they played in building the Portuguese empire in the East. The aim of this essay is to provide a general overview of the evolution of Portuguese fortifications in India and Sri Lanka, based on a series of studies carried out by several authors.
