O objectivo deste trabalho é avaliar o grau de integração financeira de Portugal no mundo em finais do século XIX, entre 1870 até 1914, e em finais do século XX, entre 1980 até 2000. A motivação do estudo relaciona-se com a necessidade de contextualizar Portugal no tema da integração financeira internacional, sobretudo, para o século XIX. Ambiciona-se que a investigação desenvolvida seja um primeiro passo para futuras pesquisas. A análise empírica realizada a partir de dados sobre os activos estrangeiros e passivos estrangeiros, em Portugal e no mundo (que é representado por uma amostra de países), utiliza uma metodologia que mede a mobilidade de capital no país. Demonstra-se que Portugal entre 1870 e 1914, foi pouco integrado financeiramente, quando comparado com o resto do mundo. Por outro lado, entre 1980 e 2000, Portugal registou um grau de integração financeira a nível internacional elevado.
The aim of this work is to evaluate the degree of financial integration of Portugal in the world at the end of 19th century, since 1870 to 1914, and at the end of 20th century, since 1980 to 2000. The motivation of the study is contextualize Portugal on the theme international financial integration, especially for the 19th century. Hopefully this investigation will be useful for futures researches. The empirical analysis, focus on the data about foreign assets and foreign liabilities in Portugal and the world (which is represented by a sample), employs one methodology that evaluate the capital mobility in a country. It demonstrates that Portugal, since 1870 to 1914, is little financially integrated when compared to the rest of the world. On the other hand, since 1980 to 2000, shows a Portugal with a high degree of financial integration.
