This thesis has its main focus in a specific period of the History of Portuguese Archaeology, the eighteenth century. As this stage is represents the period before the origin of Archaeology as a science, our objective is to determine how important are the investigations for the formulation of the discipline. For that purpose, it is used a approach with three main themes. The first one focuses on the study of Antiquities, how it is done, what chronological periods are contemplated and the nature of interpretations. The second one studies Cabinets as spaces that emcompass the material realities of the Past, their organization and collecting logic. Lastly, a analysis of Collectors, the agents responsible by the study of Antiquities and formation of Cabinets. With this, we intend to examine the potential existence of a archaeological thought in the eighteenth century in Portugal, as well as to define its main features.
