Repercussões do tratamento ortodôntico no periodonto

O tratamento ortodôntico envolve uma resposta dos tecidos periodontais, sendo que, esta resposta é dependente da situação de saúde ou doença dos mesmos. O tratamento ortodôntico realizado na presença de inflamação periodontal pode certamente contribuir para uma maior destruição dos tecidos de suporte do periodonto. Como tal, é essencial que o tratamento periodontal seja realizado antes da terapia ortodôntica, de forma a eliminar a placa bacteriana, sendo que o paciente deve ser acompanhado ao longo de todo o processo de forma a ser corretamente orientado e motivado para um ótimo controlo de placa. Uma abordagem multidisciplinar entre a Ortodontia e a Periodontologia deve ser desenvolvida, de forma a otimizar os resultados do tratamento. O objetivo desta revisão é avaliar quais as repercussões do tratamento ortodôntico no periodonto, a nível de tecidos moles e duros, quer em situação de saúde como de comprometimento periodontal.
Orthodontic treatment involves a response of periodontal tissues, and this response is dependent on the state of health or illness of the same tissues. Orthodontic treatment performed in the presence of periodontal inflammation can certainly contribute to further destruction of the supporting tissues of the periodontium. As such, it is essential that periodontal treatment is performed prior to orthodontic treatment in order to remove plaque, and the patient should be monitored throughout the process in order to be properly guided and driven for optimal control plaque. A multidisciplinary approach between Orthodontics and Periodontics should be developed in order to optimize treatment outcomes. The aim of this review is to assess the impact of orthodontic treatment on the periodontium, in soft and hard tissues, both in healthy as in periodontal involvement situations.
