A comunicação é um fator-chave em pessoas com o espectro do autismo, uma vez que as suas características comunicativas são particulares, sendo que a abordagem a este tipo de paciente deverá ser totalmente diferente e focada nas necessidades de cada um. Possuir conhecimentos adequados sobre esta desordem permite-nos agir mais rápida e eficazmente no sentido de estabelecer uma boa relação médico-paciente e, consequentemente, um tratamento bem sucedido. Este trabalho consiste numa breve discussão sobre as características gerais, patologias e hábitos orais mais comuns em indivíduos autistas, bem como técnicas que se podem realizar para adaptá-los à consulta, trabalhando com a ajuda dos pais. Será também abordada a questão do pré e pós operatório no caso de ser necessária anestesia geral no tratamento dentário.
Communication is a fundamental factor, and the population with autism spectrum has particular characteristics that make the approach to this type of patient totally different and focused on the needs of each one of them. Having the right knowledge when dealing with this disorder allows us to move faster in establishing a good patient doctor relationship and, subsequently, to be able to achieve a successful treatment. Therefore, this study consists in a brief exposition of the general characteristics and pathologies and oral habits more common in autistic individuals, as well as techniques to adapt them to the consultation together with the help of the parents. Also, the approach to the pre and post - operative care in case that general anesthesia is necessary when performing any dental treatment.
