O Barranco Horta do Almada 1 foi identificado, às portas de Beja, no âmbito de trabalhos preventivos executados no decorrer de empreitada de beneficiação dos canais de rega do Alqueva, promovida pela EDIA, S.A.
A escavação arqueológica revelou uma extensa área de fornos, com características típicas de um espaço especializado, assente numa dinâmica eminentemente associada à transformação de produtos alimentares e associado a uma produção lítica expedita, produzida a partir de matérias-primas locais.
Em termos cronológicos, e a partir de uma leitura conjunta das presenças e ausências artefactuais, este tipo de sítio balança numa linha muito ténue entre o Mesolítico e o Neolítico Antigo, encontrando-se na charneira entre dois mundos distintos do ponto de vista sociocultural. Para além do modelo de estruturas que o caracteriza, a importância deste local parte também da sua localização, pois, contraria a ideia de um interior quase desprovido de populações humanas antigas, constatando-se aqui que esta fase não se restringe exclusivamente a ocupações junto à linha de costa.
The Horta do Almada 1 Barranco was identified, at the gates of Beja, in the context of preventive works carried out during the works to improve Alqueva irrigation channels, promoted by EDIA, S.A. The archaeological excavation revealed an extensive area of kilns, with characteristics typical of a specialized space, in food processing associated with an expeditious lithic industry produced from local raw materials. In chronological terms, this type of site balances in a very tenuous line between the Mesolithic and the Early Neolithic, being in the hinge between two distinct worlds from the sociocultural point of view. In addition to the negative features that characterizes it, the importance of this place also starts from its location, since it contradicts the idea that the interior of Alentejo did not favor human populations that during this phase were not confine exclusively to the coastline.
