Abstract(s)
Clinical psychologists at the beginning of their careers find themselves in a challenging situation, facing multiple stressors specific to this profession that are increased by their inexperience and beyond that, are inserted in a culture in which they are expected to care for others without themselves being cared for. Therefore, it is essential, particularly with early career psychologists, to highlight the importance of self-care so that professionals can prevent suffering that can harm their ability to provide competent and effective services and achieve greater satisfaction in work and life. In this way, the present study aims to understand the challenges that clinical psychologists at the beginning of their careers face in their personal and professional lives and the strategies they use to deal with them, but also the boundary they perceive between their personal and professional lives, and how a balance is struck between the two. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, carried out with 14 Portuguese clinical psychologists, and subsequently analyzed through a thematic analysis using the QSR Nvivo 14 software. The results indicate the importance of awareness for proactive self-care and its contribution to a successful balance between work and personal life, resulting not only in the general well-being of these practitioners, but also in greater professional efficiency for clinical psychologists at the beginning of their careers.
