āConvergir pela Diversidade em Queluzā (āConverging for Diversity in Queluzā) is an intercultural education project - part of ConverCidade programme ā based at Escola Professional Gustave Eiffel in Queluz. The 14 youngsters involved - all between the ages of 15 and 19 and living in Sintra and Amadora, attended Year 1 of a vocational course in āSocio-cultural Animationā. They were a curious, welcoming and joyful group, and open to proposals. The hereby reported work took place between October 2015 and June 2016. Its aim was for the community to start playing an active role in its own development, as change agents who could think, create and reflect upon their perceptions of their own social context. A qualitative methodology was used to achieve this goal, in form of World CafĆ© and Focus Group as ways to identifying and analysing needs. Through this participative process, various concerns were raised, such as a lack of respect for diversity and differences. Thus, promoting change in regards to this was considered a strong need. After initial stages, the group drafted and implemented an action plan, involving the whole school community. Example activities include āQueque Queres? ā A week of positive Visibilityā and āWho wants to be a Character?ā, both of which included all of the classgroups at school, as well as their class teachers. By the end of the process, the group of youngsters felt they had achieved their objective of raising awareness and sensitising the school community for cultural diversity, suggesting that from there on a joint project could be thought out, allowing for all to participate first hand. As a result, there was also a sense of satisfaction in that, through the project, the school community would possibly pay more attention to diversity in the future, and think before judging or before pointing to the Otherās differences.
