Em 1889, o artista austríaco formado em Viena, Adolf Hausmann veio para Portugal, contratado pelo Estado português, ensinar Desenho Ornamental nas Escolas de Desenho Industrial. Tendo iniciado a sua carreira docente em Torres Novas, ao fim de cinco anos foi transferido para Tomar e, em 1897 acabou por se radicar em Faro, cidade em que permaneceu até 1916. Nesse ano, em resultado da declaração de guerra da Alemanha a Portugal, Adolf Hausmann foi expulso fixando residência em Madrid. Após o armistício, Hausmann tentou infrutiferamente recuperar o seu antigo lugar, como docente em Faro, acabando por regressar à sua cidade natal, onde viria a falecer num hospício. Espírito marcadamente introvertido, este artista acabaria por dedicar a sua vida ao ensino do desenho, direcionando a sua obra para essa atividade. Desenhador esmerado e meticuloso, durante a sua passagem por Portugal foi registando em desenho variadíssimas vistas da nossa paisagem natural e urbana, bem como aspectos gerais, parciais e mesmo pormenores de alguns dos principais edifícios e monumentos das cidades por onde passou. Paralelamente legou-nos dezenas de desenhos, representando cenas do quotidiano. No seu conjunto, as centenas de desenhos inéditos agora estudados, e pertencentes a uma coleção privada, podem ser considerados preciosos para a reconstituição histórica do nosso património material e imaterial. O estudo de desenhos exige o seu manuseamento pelo que, é sempre pertinente a análise do seu estado de conservação e medidas de conservação preventiva. Gustav Klimt, hoje considerado um dos pintores europeus mais importantes da Arte Nova, conviveu durante sete anos com Adolf Hausmann, na Escola de Artes Decorativas de Viena. Fruto desse relacionamento Hausmann guardou três desenhos realizados pelo seu condiscípulo, que agora são estudados e apresentados pela primeira vez
In 1889, the Austrian artist and Vienna graduate Adolf Hausmann was hired by the Portuguese government to teach Ornamental Drawing in the Industrial Drawing Schools. After teaching in Torres Novas for five years, he was transferred to Tomar, finally settling in Faro in 1897, where he stayed until 1916. In that year, Germany declared war on Portugal and Adolf Hausmann was expelled and moved to Madrid. After the armistice Hausmann failed to regain his old teaching post in Faro, and had to return to his native town in Austria where he died in a hospice. Being of an introvert nature, the artist dedicated his life to the teaching of drawing, which was also the main focus of his work. He was accurate and meticulous, and, while in Portugal, he drew numerous country and urban landscapes as well as different perspectives of the main buildings and monuments of the cities he lived in. He also drew dozens of scenes of everyday life. The subject of this study is a large previously unknown collection of such drawings, which are of great value in the recovery of our historical heritage. The study of drawings requires handling so it is necessary to analyze and preserve their state of conservation. For seven years, Adolf Hausmann and Gustav Klimt, one of the more important Art Nouveau painters, were fellow students at the Vienna Decorative Arts School. From that acquaintance, Hausmann kept three Klimt drawings which will now be shown and studied for the first time.
