Com a desvalorização do seu território, a Trafaria torna-se num local somente de dormitório e passagem. Caraterizado por um acentuado desordenamento urbano, este território tem vindo a ser negligenciado durante décadas, encontrando-se repleto de edifícios devolutos, nomeadamente o antigo Presídio Militar, que se encontra num elevado estado de degradação, expectante pela sua requalificação.
Ao observar a situação atual deste território ‘perdido’ na margem sul do Tejo, foi sentida uma inquietação em torná-lo o objeto de estudo e intervenção do Projeto Final de Mestrado, propondo uma estratégia de requalificação urbana para a Trafaria e a reabilitação do antigo Presídio, no qual se desenvolve um projeto arquitetónico que visa dar resposta aos grandes problemas sociais, urbanos e à inexistente preservação do património Militar, Cultural e Arquitetónico.
Surge assim ‘A Reabilitação do antigo Presídio Militar da Trafaria como Catalisador Urbano’ pois este conjunto edificado do início do século XX é a peça chave para criar uma nova centralidade no concelho de Almada, servindo a sua população e incrementando o turismo. Pretende-se que, tal como na sua função primitiva deu origem à formação do tecido urbano e à fixação de população no local, seja hoje o principal regenerador e dinamizador deste lugar expectante.
As várias linhas de investigação e análise realizadas levaram à execução de uma estratégia urbana que visa criar uma articulação entre o tecido urbano da Trafaria e o meio natural, a partir de medidas como a criação de um parque urbano que liga a zona adjacente à Indústria Cerealífera ao Monte da Raposeira.
A salvaguarda do Património Militar por meio da Reabilitação, juntamente com as medidas de Requalificação Urbanas e Ambientais, concede a preservação dos valores de memória, identidade, sociais e culturais que tornam possível a conexão entre as gerações futuras e a história do lugar.
ABSTRACT: The devaluation of the territory of Trafaria has turned this place into a dormitory and passage place only. Characterized by a large disorganized urban area, this territory has been neglected for decades, being filled with vacant buildings, among them the old Trafaria Military Prison, that is in an advanced state of degradation, awaiting rehabilitation. Analyzing the current situation of this ‘forgotten territory’ on the south bank of Tagus river, a concern to turn this place into the object of study and intervention of this Master’s Final Project was felt, aiming for an urban requalification strategy for Trafaria including the rehabilitation of the old Prison, in which an architectural project that seeks to respond to social and urban problems, as well as to reverse the nonexistent preservation of the Military, Cultural and Architectural Heritage, was developed. This way, ‘The Rehabilitation of the old Trafaria Military Prison as an Urban Catalyst’ is proposed, as this 20th century building is the key to create a new centrality in Almada, serving the local population and increasing tourism. It is intended that, equating its primitive function that gave rise to the formation of the urban space and the fixation of population on site, it will become nowadays’ main regenerator and dynamizer of this expectant place. The lines of investigation and analysis carried out led to the implementation of an urban strategy that aims to create an articulation between the urban tissue of Trafaria and the natural environment, through actions such as the creation of an urban park that connects the area next Cereal Industry with Raposeira Mountain. The preservation of the Military Heritage through rehabilitation, along with urban and environmental requalification strategies, allow the preservation of memory, identity, social and cultural values that make possible the connection between the future generations and the history of the place.
