A tuberculose apesar de ser uma das doenças infeciosas mais antigas de que há registo continua a ser uma das 10 maiores causas de morte por infeção a nível mundial. A tuberculose multirresistente (TB-MDR) é encarada como uma crise de saúde pública tendo-se, inclusive, verificado de 2018 para 2019 um aumento de 10% dos casos de TB-MDR.
Portanto, torna-se necessário uma revisão da terapêutica atualmente utilizada para formas resistentes da doença e que aborde as novas opções disponíveis para os casos em que as alternativas e esquemas de primeira linha não são adequados. A presente revisão literária pretende rever e apresentar conceitos importantes relativos à etiologia, epidemiologia, microbiologia, fisiopatologia, diagnóstico e terapêutica com especial foco na TB-MDR, abordando também potenciais novos esquemas terapêuticos em estudo.
Tuberculosis is one of the leading and oldest infectious diseases ever recorded and till this day it continues being one of the top 10 causes of death from infectious diseases across the globe. Tuberculosis is a global health threat, particularly drug resistant forms (e.g. MDR-TB) that in 2019 increased in 10% compared to 2018. According to the available data and increasing TB-MDR numbers, a review of the available treatments for MDR-TB and new emerging ones becomes ever more pressing and important. Thus this review deals with the etiology, epidemiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, with special focus on MDR-TB and other situations where the first lines of treatment are not an option.
