Abstract(s)
The present work consists of a graphic and typographic analysis of the covers of the first series of Vértice magazine (Vértice – revista de cultura e arte) — an analysis from the collection of the magazine at the Museu do Neo-Realismo, in Vila Franca de Xira —, aiming at applying the discourse of this analysis, to the museum exhibition space, through the proposal of an exhibition. For the graphic analysis of Vértice’s magazine covers, the multiple layers of the object were taken in account: Vértice as a 20th century portuguese literary magazine, playing a main role in the neorealism movement, as a graphic artefact, and as a museological artefact. For that purpose, the historical, political, social and artistic contexts in which the magazine was brought up, were taking into consideration, with na emphasis in the regards of the editorial room of Vértice when it came to the graphic aspects of the magazine (which can be read in the editorials). Starting from na observational point of the graphic and typographic aspects of the magazine, we divided the issues of the first series of the magazine into two main typologies — typographic covers (which only have type and basic geometric shapes) and graphic covers (the ones which include imagery) — sub dividing them into sub typologies, which group the covers based on their composition, type, color and imagery. Each of the typologies is organized in na adapted inventory card, which adds to the general data, the graphic attributes of each object. The process of the cover’s graphic analysis aims at its adaptation to the exhibition’s discourse, matching each typology to a segment of the exhibition. This exhibition project’s purpose is to communicate the graphic aspect in Vertice magazine’s covers, by exhibiting a selection of the publication's issues in one of the Museu do Neo-Realismo’s temporary exhibition spaces, articulating these issues with the results from the cover’s graphic analysis, results which are represented in the exhibition’s two-dimensional museographic project.
