ABSTRACT: This document is a research work on the use of social networks in the design project, more specifically how they may influence the design process. The study focuses on the conceptual phase of the process and seeks to understand how these platforms enhance or limit the student’s creativity in design. One of the expected results would be that the student, when exposed to a universe of information, represented by social networks, would be influenced or inspired by an idea that would accompany him during the rest of the design process, restraining or facilitating it until the final result is achieved. This was studied by talking directly with the student to try to perceive and follow his design process, with reference to his final project in the second semester of the Project discipline. In methodological terms, this is a non-interventionist investigation of mixed type, in which both quantitative and qualitative methods were implemented. The study universe was the students of the Degree in Design of the Faculty of Architecture of Lisbon. Quantitative research was based on an online survey, while qualitative research was based on a semi-structured interview. After the data was collected, we continued to correlate and consolidate them. Finally, the results were compared with the collected literature to thus prove and complement theories and thoughts on the addressed topics. The fundamental conclusion of this study is that, provided their benefits and limitations are understood, social networks are a powerful tool in accelerating the conceptual process, allowing students to create connections between problem and solution, starting from other solutions already existing, not being the social networks, however, decisive for the creative result. This document offers a small contribution to understand how social networks can facilitate or compromise the student design process, in an era when the benefits of using the internet begin to be recognized in the educational area.
