Este trabalho científico pretende aprofundar o conhecimento da vida e da
obra do jesuíta Francisco Furtado (1587-1653), especificamente a obra latina. Esta
última, não sendo acessível a todos, continuava a representar uma barreira
linguística, nomeadamente para historiadores que dela se quisessem ocupar.
Esses textos foram, pois, o núcleo documental desta tese desenvolvida no âmbito
dos Estudos Clássicos e enquadrada no projecto interdisciplinar financiado pela
Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia intitulado Projecto Res Sinicae, Base Digital
de Fontes Documentais em Latim e em Português sobre a China (séculos XVI XVIII),
referência PTDC / LLT OUT / 31941 / 2017, https://www.ressinicae.letras.ulisboa.pt.
Partiu-se de um levantamento sistemático dos documentos manuscritos e
impressos da autoria de Francisco Furtado, escritos em português, castelhano e
latim, resgatados de arquivos nacionais e estrangeiros, perfazendo um total de
cerca de quinhentos fólios. Destes, os textos em latim foram traduzidos para
português e constituem um apêndice fundamental deste trabalho, ficando, a
partir deste momento, disponíveis para quem os quiser consultar e estudar.
A partir da transcrição, edição, tradução e publicação destes documentos,
criou-se uma visão mais completa e detalhada da vida de Francisco Furtado, bem
como da sua contribuição e envolvimento nas questões mais importantes da
Missão da China, quer acerca da "Controvérsia dos Ritos Chineses", quer acerca
da reforma do calendário chinês, como se pode verificar nos documentos que
constituem os opera latina, o núcleo central desta tese. Além disso, foram
transcritos outros documentos que serviram de base à redacção deste estudo e
que foram ou serão disponibilizados na plataforma do projecto Res Sinicae.
This study aims to deepen the knowledge the life and work of the Jesuit Francisco Furtado (1587-1653), specifically his Latin work. This latter, a language that is not accessible to everyone, continues to represent a linguistic barrier, namely to historians who want to occupy themselves with it. These texts were therefore the documentary nucleus of this thesis developed within the framework of Classical Studies and framed within the interdisciplinary project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology entitled "Project Res Sinicae, Digital Base of Documentary Sources in Latin and Portuguese about China (16th-18th centuries)", reference PTDC/LLT - OUT/31941/2017, https://www.ressinicae.letras.ulisboa.pt. A systematic survey was carried out of the handwritten and printed documents by Francisco Furtado, written in Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin, retrieved from national and foreign archives, totaling approximately five hundred folios. Of these, the Latin texts were translated into Portuguese and constitute a fundamental appendix to this work, and are now available for consultation and study. From the transcription, editing, translation, and publication of these documents, a more complete and detailed view of Francisco Furtado's life and contribution and involvement in the most important issues of the China Mission has been created, both regarding the "Chinese Rites Controversy", and the reform of the Chinese calendar, as can be seen in the documents that constitute his Latin opera, the central nucleus of this thesis. In addition, other documents that served as a basis for the writing of this study and that have or will be made available on the Res Sinicae project platform have been transcribed.
