Abstract(s)
The project hereby presented describes the development of a collection of multimedia works that deal with the relation between feminine and monstruous. This thesis by project proposes the confrontation of a conventional point of view which defines the feminine as deviant against the norm that is masculine by default. The work parts from the definition of androcentrism and homosociality to then frame this pattern of exclusion of the feminine and explore what is the monstruous, as well as the concept of the uncanny, as defined by Jentsch and Freud. Having as background the work from researchers in art, history, literature and cinema, such as Bram Dijkstra, Silvia Federici and Barbara Creed, this thesis by project explores the connections between the representation of the feminine as grotesque and monstruous, and questions its ramifications. Finally, aiming to contextualize the practical works developed, the thesis presents an overview of the GIF format being explored artistically, a study that still lacks academic approach, despite its relevance to the contemporary production and the discussions on transmedia and digital art. The theoretic investigation is followed by practical experimentation that focus on this and other methods of artistical exploration of the moving image, both digital and analogic – the latter being explored by its relation to crafts and how it connects to social roles associated to the feminine. The research questions raised in the main body of work are the following: how can one expose the stablished connection between feminine and monstruous? How to create new representations of the feminine and its relation to the monstruous in a way that is less negatively biased? And how can my production trace links between traditional and contemporary in this attempt to promote new perspectives on the issue of investigation? Tackling the body, maternity, self-image and fears that belong to the female imaginary, these works are shaped into loop animations, digital illustrations, animation videos, wooden spoon thaumatropes and Russian dolls. With these pieces, the intention is to bring up the way we outcast the feminine and the toxic relationship we have with it, and then to propose its inversion through promoting the feminine as a subject instead of just merely an object.
