Based upon the conceptual models of Emotional Intelligence, by Salovey and Mayer (1990), and Leadership, by Popper, Amit, Gal, Mishkal-Sinai and Lisak (2007), the latter expressed by the L=P*M*D (Leadership=Potentialities*Motivation to Leadership*Development) formula, this dissertation aims at exploring the relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Motivation to Leadership, in a sample of military security forces. The findings suggest the need to include Emotional Intelligence as a Potentiality in the model, stressing its relevance in the organizational context. Furthermore, the metrological study of the MSCEIT showed that some of the reliabilityand validity results are quite limited, calling for a refinement of the test's Portuguese version. The factorial validity study, in particular, gave rise to an internal structure that lacks similarity with the original underlying conceptual framework. More precisely, a diffuse structure of the data emerged, which is not equivalent to the four conceptual branches of the model of Emotional Intelligence. Nevertheless, the total EQ seems to constitute a meaningful enough measure of the construct.
