A Bioquímica: uma "ciência de fronteira"

| dc.description.abstract | De forma a mostrar como o exemplo particular da emergência da bioquímica pode ilustrar uma tendência para a unidade da ciência interdisciplinar que julgo estar por detrás de todo o progresso científico, estudei as interconexões entre a biologia e a química que permitem explicar o processo da emergência da disciplina. Dividi o trabalho em duas partes. Na primeira, apresentei um estudo sobre vários aspectos cognitivos e institucionais relativos à emergência da bioquímica que permitem compreender o carácter interdisciplinar da disciplina. Conclui que a bioquímica é uma ciência de fronteira cuja emergência teve por base práticas interdisciplinares de importação. Conclui também, utilizando algumas teses de Thomas Kuhn, que houve um período pré-paradigmático relativamente extenso na emergência da bioquímica. Na segunda parte do trabalho, apresentei um estudo sobre o impacto exercido na emergência da bioquímica pelas figuras da unidade da ciência, como descritas por Olga Pombo (2006). São essas “figuras” – a república dos sábios, a escola, a biblioteca, o museu e a enciclopédia – que criam as condições necessárias para a articulação das diferentes ciências, evitando a completa dispersão dos conhecimentos. Pude concluir que essas figuras estiveram presentes tanto num momento anterior à emergência da bioquímica, como no momento em que esta disciplina acabava de alcançar o seu primeiro paradigma, o que revela uma elevada maturidade da mesma. Na conclusão do trabalho, apontei o sentido de uma possível investigação futura no âmbito das questões interdisciplinares que envolvem a bioquímica. Mostrei ainda como alguns aspectos relativos a processos bioquímicos que estão a ser investigados na actualidade podem ser interpretados sob uma perspectiva não reducionista que serve uma unidade da ciência interdisciplinar. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | In order to show how the particular example of the emergence of biochemistry can illustrate a tendency for an interdisciplinary unity of science that I think is behind all scientific progress, I studied the interconnections between biology and chemistry that can explain the process of the emergence of the discipline. I divided the work in two parts. In the first part, I presented a study about various intellectual and institutional aspects regarding the emergence of biochemistry that show the interdisciplinary character of the discipline. I concluded that biochemistry is a frontier science which had in the basis of its emergence interdisciplinary practices of importation. I also concluded, using some of Thomas Kuhn’s thesis, that there was a relatively long preparadigmatic period in the emergence of biochemistry. In the second part of the work, I presented a study about the impact exerted on the emergence of biochemistry by the figures of the unity of science, as described by Olga Pombo (2006). These figures – the republic of the wise, the school, the library, the museum, and the encyclopedia – create the necessary conditions for the articulation of the different sciences, avoiding the complete dispersion of knowledge. I was able to conclude that these figures were present both before the emergence of biochemistry and in the moment the discipline had just attained its first paradigm, which indicates a high level of maturity of the discipline. In the conclusion of the work, I pointed in the direction of a possible future investigation regarding the interdisciplinary aspects that surround biochemistry. Also I showed some aspects related to biochemical processes that are being investigated presently, which can be interpreted under a non reductionist perspective that serves an interdisciplinary unity of science. | eng |
