The phenomenon of Chinese immigration has been growing in Portugal in the context of globalization and the implementation of immigration policies by the Government of Portugal. The schooling of Chinese immigrant students has become a recurring reality in Portuguese territory. The differences between the cultural contexts and the educational systems cause that the Chinese students feel some difficulties in their integration in the Portuguese schools. This situation is a challenge for students and, at the same time, it is also a factor that brings new challenges to Portuguese schools and their teachers. The teaching of Portuguese as Non-Native Language (Português Língua Não materna - PLNM) was incorporated into the national curriculum by the Ministry of Education in the 2000s of the twenty-first century with the purpose of protecting linguistic diversity and promoting equal opportunities and school success for all students in schools as well as to promote the integration of students of school age in the educational system and society of Portugal. The objective of this study is to analyse the characteristics of PLNM teaching in private schools to the newly arrived Chinese immigrant students and the problems that exist in this initial phase of their integration process in the Portuguese educational system. The aim is to understand if there are specific needs of these students and to identify who are the teachers that work them and to find what are their specific needs. This contribution could improve the teaching of Portuguese as non-native language in basic education to Chinese immigrant students, especially to newcomers in Portugal. In a deeper perspective, it will also be possible to contribute to an improvement in the integration of Chinese immigrants into the Portuguese society, in particular, the integration of future generations.
