Laryngeal cancer is one of the most frequent cancers of the head and neck. About 600 new cases per year are diagnosed in Portugal, corresponding to 2% of all cancers diagnosed. Nonetheless there has been a decrease in the incidence of these tumors in the last decade. There are already several well-established risk factors for laryngeal cancer. The main factors behind laryngeal cancer are tobacco and alcohol. There are, however, other factors that have been correlated with this cancer, namely, environmental exposure, dietary factors, presence of reflux, microbiota, weight, estrogens and infection with HPV. The change of risk factors in the general population may be involved in reducing the incidence of laryngeal cancer.
