| dc.description.abstract | Nesta tese, apresento uma proposta de um novo modelo linguístico que serve como fundamento para uma teoria de identidade narrativa simbólica, destacando a hibridez e multiplicidade das identidades africanas. Além disso, investigo o papel de Ernst Cassirer na problematização da identidade e como suas teorias podem enriquecer uma compreensão mais abrangente e diversificada das identidades culturais. Argumento que a identidade narrativa simbólica é uma manifestação da subjetividade humana que emerge da interação com outros, requerendo condições favoráveis de comunicação, participação e valorização das diferenças. Analiso o papel da linguagem na formação da identidade narrativa, considerando tanto o diálogo interno quanto externo com outros indivíduos. Para isso, recorro às abordagens teóricas de Ernst Cassirer, Charles Taylor e Achille Mbembe, os quais concebem a linguagem como um fenómeno cultural, social e político. Segundo essa perspectiva, Cassirer e Taylor argumentam que a linguagem é um instrumento de mediação nas sociedades plurais, ressaltando a importância da liberdade e do reconhecimento na construção da identidade. Por outro lado, Mbembe oferece uma visão crítica sobre a influência do pensamento ocidental na configuração das identidades africanas, as quais são caracterizadas como híbridas. Demonstro também como esses três pensadores contribuíram para uma teoria da identidade narrativa, enfatizando os elementos da linguagem (tais como as formas simbólicas em Ernst Cassirer), liberdade (o afropolitanismo de Achille Mbembe) e reconhecimento (o multiculturalismo de Charles Taylor). Por meio de uma análise comparativa, revelam-se suas semelhanças, diferenças e implicações éticas, políticas e culturais para a construção de uma linguagem na identidade narrativa simbólica. Além disso, examino outras perspectivas, como as de Axel Honneth, Kwame Anthony Appiah, e outros pensadores africanos, para aprofundar a compreensão das lutas pelo reconhecimento das identidades. Apresento a noção de como a cultura, a linguagem e o tempo moldam as identidades africanas. Portanto, esta tese busca uma compreensão mais profunda da permeabilidade das sociedades africanas à cultura ocidental, destacando as transformações resultantes para o tecido social africano. É importante destacar que essa influência é unilateral, uma vez que há resistência por parte dos antigos países colonizadores quando expostos às influências da cultura africana. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | In this thesis, I present a proposition of a new linguistic model that serves as a foundation for a theory of symbolic narrative identity, highlighting the hybridity and multiplicity of African identities. Additionally, I investigate the role of Ernst Cassirer in problematizing identity and how his theories can enrich a broader and more diversified understanding of cultural identities. I argue that symbolic narrative identity is a manifestation of human subjectivity emerging from interaction with others, needing favorable conditions of communication, participation, and appreciation of differences. I analyze the role of language in the formation of narrative identity, considering both internal and external dialogue with other individuals. To this end, I draw upon the theoretical approaches of Ernst Cassirer, Charles Taylor, and Achille Mbembe, who conceive language as a cultural, social, and political phenomenon. From this perspective, Cassirer and Taylor argue that language serves as a mediating tool in pluralistic societies, emphasizing the importance of freedom and recognition in identity construction. On the other hand, Mbembe offers a critical view of the influence of Western thought in shaping African identities, which are characterized as hybrid. I also demonstrate how these three thinkers contributed to a theory of narrative identity, emphasizing language elements (such as symbolic forms in Ernst Cassirer), freedom (Achille Mbembe's afropolitanism), and recognition (Charles Taylor's multiculturalism). Through comparative analysis, their similarities, differences, and ethical, political, and cultural implications for constructing a language in symbolic narrative identity are revealed. Furthermore, I examine other perspectives, such as those of Axel Honneth, Kwame Anthony Appiah, and other African thinkers, to deepen the understanding of struggles for identity recognition. I introduce the notion of how culture, language, and time shape African identities. Therefore, this thesis aims for a deeper understanding of the permeability of African societies to Western culture, highlighting resulting transformations for the African social fabric. It is important to note that this influence is unidirectional, as resistance from former colonizing countries is encountered when exposed to African cultural influences. | pt_PT |
