Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that remains as a major health problem all around the world and is ranked as the second leading caused of death from a single infectious agent, after the immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In 2012, 8.6 million people fell ill with tuberculosis, including 1.1 million cases among people with HIV. And, altough this disease is one of the oldest ones in the world, it is a very present issue. In fact, in 1993 WHO proclaimed it as a global emergency. Since then, a number of efforts have been made to reduce the number of deaths caused by tuberculosis. Nowadays, there is only one vaccine to prevent this disease, the Baccille-Calmette Guérin vaccine (BCG). However, this one has a few limitations, such as a highly variable protection against pulmonary TB in adults. The first priority of the scientists these days is to develop a new vaccine that will help improve the current protective efficacy of the BCG or to develop a new and better one that will replace the BCG. Currently there are several vaccines in development and already in clinical trials. The aim of this work is to describe the existing development of the vaccination which may prove to be an important tool to understand where we are now and what efforts need to be made in order to achieve the goal, have a more effective vaccine allowing the decrease in the number of cases of people infected with tuberculosis worldwide.
