The municipality of Moura, located in the district of Beja, stretches along the left bank of the Guadiana River, bordering Spain. Its landscape is marked by extensive olive groves, areas of montado (cork oak forest), fruit trees, and livestock. At the time of this research, the municipality had seven parishes, five of which were rural: São João Batista and Santo Agostinho located in Moura, Povoa de São Miguel, Amareleja, Safara, Santo Aleixo da Restauração, and Sobral da Adiça. This research focuses on the municipality of Moura between 1933 and 1974, during the Estado Novo regime in Portugal, with the aim of showing why the municipality under study would be characterized as rural, not only based on the main pillars of the municipality's economy, which were agriculture and olive growing, but also to observe other aspects such as communication routes, education, and the municipality's weak urbanization. The problems faced by the municipality will also be analyzed, as well as whether it was possible to find solutions to them.
