instrumentos, nomeadamente a observação naturalista e os documentos escritos. A
This work aims to know how the inquiry tasks on the topic “Materials” influence the development of the competences indicated on the Physics and Natural Sciences curriculum for elementary education. In order to do it, the students’ difficulties and their learning were analyzed, as well as the strategies used by the students when performing the inquiry tasks. Five inquiry tasks under the topic “Materials”, which is inserted in the theme “Earth in Transformation”, were carried out with a 7th grade class of 25 students during eleven classes of 50 minutes each. It is used the qualitative research methodology, since the objective is to know and describe the students’ reaction when the inquiry tasks are implemented in the classroom. Different research instruments were used to collect the data, such as the naturalistic observation and written documents. With the analysis of the results several categories and sub-categories are identified, which allows the data organization. The results showed that the students have some difficulties when performing the tasks, however, these have been overcome during the classes allowing the learning process and leading to the development of knowledge, thought, communication and attitudes. This is also concluded by the strategies used by the students, such as using the student’s book for research and sharing of ideas.
