A amostra incluiu 135 pais adotivos e 187 pais biológicos.
Despite the various resemblances between adoptive and biologic parenthood, adoptive parents face unique family processes and specificities that come, largely, from the fact that their kids come from “outside” their family system. The present study aimed to: 1) compare biological and adoptive parents in their attachment styles, parental stress and family environment; 2) analyze the relation between parents’ attachment styles, parental stress and family environment, considering biological and adoptive parents; 3) analyze the contribute of parental stress (parental distress, dysfunctional interaction, difficult child), and of parents’ attachment styles (secure vs. insecure) in the family environment (cohesion and conflict) in biological and adoptive parents. Our sample consisted of 135 adoptive parents and 187 biological parents. Participants responded to the following instruments: Parental Stress Index in its short-form, the Relationship Questionnaire in its Portuguese version and the Family Environment Scale. We verified that adoptive parents showed less levels of family conflict and that parental stress contributes to family environment.
