Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, with hypertension as one of the major modifiable risk factors. In Portugal, the prevalence of hypertension is around 42%. 46% of this fraction is diagnosed and 11% is controlled. These numbers highlight the need for an urgent application of effective measures for hypertension diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Since most patients are followed in primary care units and not by a resident doctor, the existence of practical guidelines (PG) is of utmost importance in order to effectively aid medical staff in this pathology’s diagnosis and treatment. The PG are scientific and technical recommendations that aim to help doctors in the decision process relative to diagnosis and treatment of several diseases. There are several PG directed for hypertension treatment with minor differences between them. This review aims to compare all the different guidelines and reach a therapeutic rationale, having the patient’s clinical status and it’s hypertension stage as its main starting point.
