A influência do nível de literacia dos oceanos do público escolar na sociedade

Não há como negar a importância do Oceano para humanidade, principalmente
em Portugal, um país cuja história e cultura se encontram indiscutivelmente interligados
ao mar. Deste modo, perante o estado de ameaça do ambiente marinho, cujos problemas
são causados maioritariamente pela ação humana, é necessário que exista um esforço
coletivo que resulte na sua proteção. Ao longo desta dissertação apresentar-se-á a tese de
que através da consciência e das ações individuais de cada indivíduo se poderá construir
uma estratégia bottom-up eficiente para esse fim. A Literacia do Oceano (LO), cujo
objetivo é o da educação para a compreensão da “influência do Oceano em nós e a nossa
influência no Oceano” surge como o contexto ideal pelo qual se poderá implementar esta
estratégia. O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa onde se
implementou um questionário sobre a Literacia do Oceano, a Consciência Ambiental, a
Cidadania Ambiental e a Relação Pessoal com o Oceano a 1025 alunos do 3º Ciclo do
Ensino Básico de Portugal. Os principais objetivos desta investigação são: 1) Estudar o
nível de LO do público-alvo. Nomeadamente, compreender a relação que se estabelece
entre os dois tipos de conhecimento identificados para este projeto (O conhecimento dos
ecossistemas e da biodiversidade marinha e O conhecimento da relação/interação do ser humano com estes ecossistemas). Compreendendo, adicionalmente, de onde provêm estes
conhecimentos; 2) Relacionar o nível de LO apresentado com a capacidade de agir e ter
um papel ativo na sociedade. Os resultados deste trabalho revelaram que os níveis de LO
dos jovens do 3º Ciclo do Ensino Básico registados em Portugal são reduzidos. No
entanto, níveis mais elevados de conhecimento refletem níveis mais elevados de
Consciência Ambiental. Por sua vez, níveis mais elevados de Consciência Ambiental
refletem níveis mais elevados de Cidadania Ambiental. Estas descobertas validam a
implementação da LO em contexto escolar como uma solução viável para a mitigação
dos problemas ambientais oceânicos. A Relação Pessoal que se estabelece com o Oceano
também exerce uma influência nos níveis de Conhecimento, Consciência e Cidadania
Ambiental. Verifica-se um maior interesse e conhecimento por parte dos inquiridos, pelas
temáticas das características bióticas do Oceano e a fonte de informação mais valorizadas
pelos mesmos é a Internet. As variáveis socio-demográficas sexo e nível de escolaridade
impactam o conhecimento enquanto a proximidade ao litoral influencia o tipo de relação
que se estabelece com o Oceano. A variável sexo influencia também os níveis de
Consciência Ambiental e Cidadania ambiental. Considera-se que estas informações
adicionais poderão ajudar na compreensão e implementação das estratégias de promoção
da LO.
There is no way of denying the importance of the Ocean to humanity, especially in Portugal, a country whose history and culture are indisputably intertwined wit it.Thus,considering the threatened state of the marine environment,whose problems are mostly caused by human action, there is a crucial need for a collective effort that results in its protection. Throughout this dissertation, it is argued that through the conscience and individual actions of the individuals, an effecient bottom-up strattegy can be built for this purpose.Ocean Literacy,(OL) whose main objective is that of “understanding the ocean's influence on you and your influence on the ocean” appears as the ideal context by which we can implement this strategy.This work presents the results of a survey where a questionnaire on Ocean Literacy, Environmental Conscience, Environmental Citizenship and Personal Relationship with the Ocean was implemented on 1025 students of the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education in Portugal.The main objectives of this investigation are the following: 1) Studying the level of OL levels of the target audience. Namely, understanding the relation established between the two types of knowledge identified for this project (A: The knowledge of ecosystems and marine biodiversity and B: The knowledge of the interaction of human beings with them). In addition, understanding where this knowledge comes from; 2) Relating the level of OL registered with the ability to act and have an active role in society.This work’s results revealed that the OL levels of the youth from the 3rd cycle of basic education registered in Portugal are low. However, higher levels of knowledge reflect higher levels of Environmental Conscience.In turn, higher levels of Environmental Conscience reflect higher levels of Enrironmental Citizenship.These findings validate the implementation of OL in school context as a viable solution to mitigate the oceanic environmental problems.The Personal Relation that is established with the Ocean also influences the level of knowledge, Environmental Conscience and Enrironmental Citizenship. There is a greater interest and knowledge in the themes of biotic Ocean characteristics, and most value the Internet as a source of information.The socio-demographic variables sex and education level impact knowledge, while the proximity to the coast influences the type of relation established with the Ocean.It is considered that this aditional information may help in the understanding and implementation of OL promotion strategies.
