This dissertation, entitled Stereotypes in Drawing, was carried out within a pedagogical context and aims at studying the existence of stereotypes in drawing. We have decided to carry out this research in order to adjust the teaching of drawing to the present Portuguese educational situation. This issue, given its universal nature, raises our awareness of other realities in the subject of knowledge, of the different professional activities and of the underlying social and economic issues. It also guides us to several hypotheses regarding our responsibility in this area. Among them we can single out family, school, social environment and the educational system itself. Our main goal was to verify the existence of stereotyped drawings, a common factor in students between five and twenty five years of age from different social backgrounds in Portugal. To reach that goal we had to understand to what extent our teachers help to perpetuate these stereotypes and how to find solutions that may encourage originality in order to eradicate mental schemes deprived of personal expression.
