The well-being economy : an international analysis with application to Portugal

This dissertation explores the concept of a well-being economy (WBE) and its potential to promote sustainable and equitable economic development with application in Portugal. Through an extensive literature review, the study examines the policies and strategies implemented by different countries and organizations, focusing on the legislative frameworks, used indicators, and stakeholder engagement.
Based on a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with Wellbeing Economy Alliance Hubs from Wales, Scotland, and New Zealand. It analyzes the experiences of countries such as Wales, Scotland, and New Zealand in implementing policies and frameworks that prioritize well-being over economic growth.
In pursuit of a WBE, the work provides advice to adopt proactive measures that are specifically tailored to address the core requirements and preferences of the population.
The study applies these insights to Portugal, exploring and proposing recommendations for transitioning towards a WBE, including the creation of a comprehensive strategy, the promotion of community engagement and participation in decision-making processes, and the reorientation of public investment towards projects that promote well-being. The study concludes that a WBE represents a promising alternative to the current economic growth model, offering a path towards a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all.
