Abstract: This dissertation is based upon the study of the Islamic period ceramics, recovered in the excavation that took place on the Alcáçova de Santarém, between the years of 1999 and 2000. A pottery set was selected from the interior of thirteen pits, located in the excavation sector 1B. This set had been deposited as a rubbish context, therefore, not corresponding to a primary deposition. The sample selected for this study was characterized as common pottery, with a diversified morphology. These materials belong, almost totally, to the chronological period between the XI and XII centuries. This study aims to integrate the ceramics and, on a more general basis, the territory of Santarém, by comparatively establishing common features with other similar Islamic realities in the scope of the Portuguese territory.
