Esta tese investiga a ação de cabeceamento no futebol, explorando a sua naturezamultifacetada e abordando dimensões históricas, teóricas e práticas. O trabalho visapreencher uma lacuna na compreensão do cabeceamento como uma propriedadeemergente do sistema jogador-ambiente, utilizando o referencial da dinâmica ecológicapara reformular a conceção e treino desta habilidade.No segundo capítulo, a tese analisa a evolução histórica do conceito de habilidade,contrastando abordagens reducionistas ocidentais, que fragmentam a habilidade, comabordagens holísticas orientais, que integram mente, corpo e ambiente. Esteenquadramento teórico sustenta a aplicação das dinâmicas ecológicas nas ciências dodesporto e no estudo de habilidades complexas.A revisão de escopo apresentada no terceiro capítulo identifica lacunas na investigação,como a predominância de abordagens teóricas tradicionais, falta de fundamentaçãoteórica e limitada inclusão de atletas femininas e regiões sub-representadas. A diversidadede definições da habilidade no futebol sublinha a necessidade de projetos mais inclusivose com uma base teórica sólida.Os capítulos 4-5 analisam o cabeceamento no contexto de futebol de alto rendimento. Oquarto capítulo explora dados notacionais da Premier League Inglesa, evidenciando quea maioria dos cabeceamentos ocorre em situações de bola parada com funções defensivas,destacando a importância de coordenação posicional e reação rápida. O quinto capítuloaprofunda esta análise com dados espaço-temporais da Primeira Liga Portuguesa,examinando adaptações defensivas em posses curtas e longas, e revelando padrões desincronia entre defesas-centrais.A tese utiliza métodos avançados como o K-MEDOIDS com Dynamic Time Warping epropõe ambientes de treino que replicam restrições de jogo, promovendo a aprendizagemadaptativa. São recomendados exercícios específicos contextualizados que enfatizem avariabilidade e a tomada de decisão sob pressão temporal.Conclui-se que a adoção da dinâmica ecológica oferece uma abordagem robusta parainvestigar e treinar o cabeceamento no futebol, com implicações práticas para odesenvolvimento de jogadores e futuras investigações.
This thesis explores the multifaceted nature of football header skill, providing acomprehensive analysis that spans historical, theoretical, and empirical dimensions. Itaddresses the longstanding gap in understanding header skill as an emergent property ofthe player-environment system, applying the ecological dynamics framework to reframeits conceptualization and training. Through a series of studies, the thesis examines headerskill in football, highlighting contextual and situational factors that are often overlookedin traditional research.Following the introductory chapter of the thesis, the second chapter traces the evolutionof the concept of skill, from ancient philosophical roots to modern applications in football.It highlights the contrast between Western reductionist traditions and Eastern holisticapproaches, setting the stage for adopting ecological perspectives in sports science.Building on this foundation, the third chapter presents a scoping review of football skillrelatedinterventions, revealing significant disparities in research focus. It underscores thedominance of traditional theoretical approaches, the limited inclusion of female athletesand underrepresented regions, and the necessity for context-sensitive, inclusive researchdesigns.Empirical analyses (Chapters 4-5) focus on header execution in high-performancefootball. In the fourth chapter, a detailed notational analysis of English Premier Leaguedata illustrates the variability and situational demands of header skill. Findings highlightthat most headers occur during set plays and serve defensive purposes, with significantsituational, positional, and technical variations. The fifth chapter advances thisunderstanding by employing spatiotemporal data from Portuguese Primeira Liga matchesto analyze center backs’ behaviors in defensive crossing situations. Using collective andinterpersonal variables, this study reveals distinct spatial-temporal adaptations acrossvarying possession lengths, emphasizing the critical role of dyadic coordination indefensive crossing situations.A key contribution of the thesis is the development of theoretical and methodologicalinsights for designing representative training environments. By integrating ecologicalprinciples, it demonstrates how training tasks can replicate the dynamic constraints ofreal-game conditions. Practical recommendations include context-specific small-sidedgames and exercises tailored to positional and tactical demands. In conclusion, this thesis advocates for a paradigm shift in football skill research andpractice by embracing ecological dynamics. It introduces innovative theoretical andmethodological insights to an understudied area of header skill, including the applicationof collective and interpersonal variables and the integration of ecological principles intraining design. These contributions provide a robust framework for studying and trainingcomplex skills like headers, fostering a holistic and contextually relevant understandingof football performance. The findings offer actionable recommendations for coaches andpractitioners, paving the way for inclusive and dynamic approaches to skill learning andplayer development.
