A arquitetura militar é, hoje, um importante património que foi deixado nas cidades. A cidade de Setúbal, apelidada de cidade defensora pelas funções que desempenhou, é um dos grandes exemplos dessa herança. Atualmente, pela sua falta de utilização, mui to deste património encontra-se ao abando no, como é o caso da 8ª Bateria Militar de Albarquel, criando vazios urbanos nas cidades. Contruir novos espaços, novos edifícios, criar arquitetura, novas ideias, não tem de ser sinónimo de destruição ou de esquecimento das pré-existências, do que vem de antes. Construir, projetar, podem sim ser sinónimos de preservar, de construir sobre a memória, sobre a identidade de um lugar. O tempo implica que as coisas evoluam, que as cidades evoluam, que os lugares evoluam, no entanto, construir sobre a lógica do palimpsesto implica a tentativa de recuperar o passado, reinventando-o através da contemporaneidade. Este Trabalho Final de Mestrado propõe assim, a requalificação da 8ª Bateria Militar de Albarquel. O equipamento surge como elemento central da requalificação do lugar, respeitando a pré-existência ao mesmo tempo que integra elementos contemporâneos, tornando-se num ponto de centralidade que promove a educação, a pesquisa científica e a interação social entre trabalhadores e visitantes.
Military architecture is, today, an important heritage left behind in cities. The city of Setúbal, nicknamed the defender city for the roles it played, is one of the great examples of this legacy. Currently, due to its lack of use, much of this heritage is abandoned, as is the case with the 8th Military Battery of Albarquel, creating urban voids within cities. Building new spaces, new buildings, creating architecture, and new ideas does not have to mean the destruction or forgetting of pre-existing structures, of what came before. Building and designing can indeed be synonymous with preservation, with constructing upon memory, upon the identity of a place. Time implies that things evolve, that cities evolve, that places evolve; however, building under the logic of the palimpsest involves an attempt to recover the past, reinventing it through contemporaneity. This Master's Final Project thus proposes the rehabilitation of the 8th Military Battery of Albarquel. The facility emerges as a central element in the requalification of the site, respecting the pre-existing structure while integrating contemporary elements, becoming a point of centrality that promotes education, scientific research, and social interaction between workers and visitors.
