Organizada no âmbito do IV Simpósio Ibero-Americano de História da Cartografia a exposição apresenta uma ampla retrospectiva sobre os estudos de cartografia antiga realizados em Portugal ao longo dos últimos duzentos anos. É revisitada a obra produzida no domínio da história da cartografia por mais de uma dezena de investigadores portugueses, entre os quais sobressaem os nomes do 2.º visconde de Santarém, Duarte Leite, Abel Fontoura da Costa, Jaime e Armando Cortesão, Luís de Albuquerque e Avelino Teixeira da Mota. Foram seleccionadas cerca de 80 peças pertencentes aos diversos fundos da Biblioteca Nacional de portugal, incluindo livros, artigos, manuscritos autógrafos, fotografias, gravuras, atlas e mapas. A exposição ilustra os progressos de um campo do saber ao qual Portugal esteve associado desde a sua génese, nas primeiras décadas do século XIX. Encontra-se organizada em quatro núcleos, correspondentes a períodos definidos por contextos culturais, científicos e político-diplomáticos específicos.
Organized within the scope of the IV Ibero-American Symposium on the History of Cartography, the exhibition presents a broad retrospective on studies of ancient cartography carried out in Portugal over the last two hundred years. The work produced in the field of the history of cartography by more than a dozen Portuguese researchers is revisited, among which stand out the names of the 2nd Viscount of Santarém, Duarte Leite, Abel Fontoura da Costa, Jaime and Armando Cortesão, Luís de Albuquerque and Avelino Teixeira da Mota. Around 80 pieces belonging to the various collections of the National Library of Portugal were selected, including books, articles, autograph manuscripts, photographs, engravings, atlases and maps. The exhibition illustrates the progress of a field of knowledge to which Portugal has been associated since its inception, in the first decades of the 19th century. It is organized into four nuclei, corresponding to periods defined by specific cultural, scientific and political-diplomatic contexts.
