Participaram no estudo cinco pais e cinco mães.
Raising a child is a great responsibility challenge and demands deep transformation and adaptation in the parents’ lives, likely to cause imbalance and vulnerability to themselves and to have implications in the children’s healthy development. In this study we sought to answer to the investigation question “How does the transition to parenthood practice develops during the child’s first year?”. We intended to understand the nature of this transition; to identify the personal, social and communitarian conditions in which it occurs and to understand the nature of its action; and also to understand the parents’ patterns of response; aiming at the development of a mid-range theory which might contribute to the improvement of the nursing care quality provided to the family in this transition. We used the methodological referential of the Grounded Theory; the semi-structured interviews (complemented with observation), the constant comparative method and the theoretical sampling for data collection and/or data analysis. These were collected in domiciliary context, in five different moments, in a total of 75 interviews and 43 visits. Five fathers and five mothers participated in this study. The results allowed the construction of an explanatory theoretical model of transition in the parenthood practice experience, defined by the core category Being a father, being a mother: an interaction-based process in the making, which represents the emergence of a force that enables the parent’s personal transformation, motivated to child care and the renovation of the necessary strength for the daily struggle which represents the parenthood. It demonstrates the continuous movement of the intra and interpersonal parents’ organization, which outweighs the temporality of parental condition as an identity reconstruction. The concepts identified in the study contribute to enlarge the comprehension of parenthood’s phenomenon and provide a way to reflexion about the interaction and the intervention in this area at the level of primary health care practice.
