Abstract(s)

This study aims to develop an experiential project that encourages deep reflection by engaging with sensitive content in a museum context, followed by a dance-based experience focused on the theme of freedom. Specifically, the study addresses the issue of political imprisonment before April 25, 1974. A visit to the Museu do Aljube served as a starting point for exploring sensitive and traumatic experiences, with the goal of transforming them into an art-education project. This was implemented through the methodologies of Rudolf Laban and Isadora Duncan's free dance with a class of 7th-grade students. The lack of initiatives connecting the museum environment to schools, particularly through dance and performance as a pedagogical tool for artistic education, highlighted the powerful and catalytic role of such projects in fostering critical thinking and reflective awareness. A case study from the Holocaust Museum in Curitiba was used as a reference, alongside a previous performance by the author related to the 25 de Abril theme. Each session in this project was documented using the A/r/tographic method, chosen for its integration of the author’s roles as dancer, teacher, and researcher. This approach supported the creation of an intimate diary, documenting every session. A dance video was produced as the primary medium capable of fully capturing and translating this experience, illustrating the culmination of both a performative and pedagogical journey. This research underscores how pedagogical experiences of this nature stimulate critical thinking by engaging with sensitive and traumatic museum content, which is then given new life and context outside the museum. Through dance, these themes are carried into the studio, where they become contemporary within each participant.
