Chronic Kidney Disease is defined as a decrease in kidney function or presence of kidney injury for at least three months. It is a pathology that assumes particular importance due to its increasing prevalence, estimated in 9.1% in the world population. The morbidity and mortality associated with this disease are very high. Despite the improvement in the care provided to patients with chronic kidney disease, their mortality is higher than the general population, ranking as the 12th cause of death in the world population. The mortality is caused not only by the loss of kidney function itself but also by the physiopathology changes of the disease. Thus, the cardiovascular mortality has particular importance in this group of patients, being recognized as the main cause of death in people with chronic kidney disease. There are many factors associated with the high cardiovascular mortality in chronic kidney disease and early recognition is fundamental to intervene, in an attempt to improve the patient’s prognosis. It was researched in PubMed platform the MeSh terms “Renal Insufficiency, Chronic”, “mortality” and "Cardiovascular Diseases/mortality". Articles written in English or Portuguese about the human population were selected, excluding articles about nonhuman and pediatric population.
