Abstract(s)
Parents' mindset and the way they perceive obstacles influence their parenting behaviors as well as children's perception of themselves (Dweck, 2021). The COVID-19 pandemic forced the transition of classes to an online format and parents were required to assume important pedagogical roles to support their children's education. Therefore, the general objective of this study is to understand the mental attitude of parents, as well as their perceptions about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the learning ability and academic success of their children. In this investigation, participated 115 parents residing in Portugal, with children attending the 1st cycle of basic education, in which 104 are female and 11 are male, aged between 26 and 51 years old. To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on learning ability and in general, eight open-answer questions were used and to understand Mental Attitude the Mental Attitude Questionnaire was applied. After exploratory factor analysis of the Mental Attitude Questionnaire, three factors were found, which does not coincide with previous studies (Dweck, 2021), with similar questions. The analysis of open responses shows the existence of four dimensions - Positive Impact, Negative Impact, Neutral Impact and General Impact - where Negative Impact stands out, which is in line with previous studies (Delicado & Ferrão, 2021). Finally, the relationship between these two instruments seems to confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic, from the perspective of parents, is perceived as having a negative impact on learning ability and school success, regardless of the type of Mindset observed.
