Daniel and Apocalypse: scapegoats for 21st Century violence?

dc.description.abstractTwenty years after the 9/11 attacks and the beginning of the War on Terror that underlined the opposition between East and West, and now when the West leaves Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban, this essay attempts to analyse if the reasons for what is described as “religious violence” can be attributed to the Sacred Texts. As we shall demonstrate, neither Daniel nor Revelation contain any “call to arms” to approximate the present to the time of the end. This “end” refers to the promised divine kingdom to be established by the deity at the end of time. It corresponds to a new cosmos, one close to the description of Paradise. Nevertheless, the texts clearly state that the time of the end is only known to God and that the righteous should endure the tribulation. What is clear from reading the texts and analysing the propaganda that has led to the gather of troops under radical flags is that the ignorance of most of the population regarding the content of the Sacred Texts is damaging and needs to be prevented. How? Through education, putting an end to the academic Ivory Tower, and initiating a real collaboration between academia and policymakers and the broader society.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractVinte anos depois dos ataques do 11 de Setembro e do início da Guerra ao Terrorismo que sublinharam a oposição entre Oriente e Ocidente, e no momento em que o Ocidente deixa o Afeganistão nas mãos dos Talibã, este trabalho procura analisar se as razões do que é descrito como “violência religiosa” pode ser atribuída aos Textos Sagrados. Como demonstraremos, nem Daniel nem o livro do Apocalipse contêm qualquer “chamada às armas” para aproximar o presente ao tempo do fim. Este “fim” refere-se ao Reino Prometido de Deus a ser estabelecido pela divindade no fim dos tempos. Corresponde a um novo cosmos, um próximo da descrição do Paraíso. No entanto, os textos claramente expressam que o tempo do fim é conhecido apenas por Deus e que os justos devem suportar a tribulação. O que é claro da leitura dos textos e da análise da propaganda que levou à reunião de tropas sob a égide de bandeiras radicais, é que a ignorância da maioria da população sobre o conteúdo dos Textos Sagrados é perigosa e carece medidas preventivas. Como? Pela educação, pondo fim à torre de marfim académica e iniciando uma colaboração real entre academia, agentes políticos e a sociedade em geral.pt_PT
