| dc.description.abstract | A passagem do regime monetário bimetalista para o padrão-ouro em Julho de 1854, foi precedida de discussões no parlamento português. O objectivo deste artigo será encontrar, através da análise das intervenções parlamentares, os fundamentos do novo enquadramento institucional. Se todos os deputados reconheceram a necessidade de modificar o regime monetário então vigente, e convergiram nesse objectivo, os percursos propostos sobre o tipo de padrão a adoptar não revelaram à partida unanimidade. O estudo das trajetórias dos debates terá em conta os referenciais teóricos e doutrinários utilizados, enquadrando esses referentes no pensamento Economico português da época. O pragmatismo da solução encontrada será uma das conclusöes, o que se justifica não só pela secular aliança luso-britânica e pelo peso já significativo de moedas de ouro em circulação, como também por ser o padrão monetário que servia um regime politicamente liberal. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The adoption of the gold standard in Portugal — Parliamentary debates: The change from the bimetallic monetary system to the gold standard in July 1854 was preceded by lengthy discussions in the Portuguese parliament. Through the analysis of parliamentary speeches, this paper seeks to uncover the underlying bases of the new institutional framework. Whilst all members of parliament recognised the need for a change in the monetary system in force at that time, demonstrating their complete convergence of opinion in regard to this aim, they showed no unanimity in their proposals as to the particular type of standard that was to be adopted. The study of the various directions taken by the debates takes into account the theoretical and doctrinaire systems of reference that were used, situating these referents in the context of Portuguese economic thought at that time. One of the conclusions drawn highlights the pragmatism of the solution that was found, a situation that was justified not only by the longstanding British-Portuguese alliance, but also by the already significant amount of gold coins in circulation, as well by the fact that this was the monetary standard that best served the interests of a politically liberal regime. | pt_PT |
