Abstract(s)
This master’s thesis explores the ritual of sacred pilgrimage to the sanctuary city of Fátima. It addresses the pilgrimage and the ritual of walking to a architectural center as an antidote to the current secular world, in which the pilgrim is guided by spiritual orientation, embodies the hero’s journey, an archetypal model exposed by Joseph Campbell. Although pilgrimage is indeed recognized as a journey in search of a religious goal, it will be studied in this work as a powerful social and cultural vector, anchored by architecture, as a delimiting space for rituals and traditions of originally religious cults. The project will expand the definition of pilgrimage to the site of Fátima, in its most reserved and hidden space, in Valinhos, also known as the “Lung of Fátima”. Though the works of Carl Jung, Mircea Eliade and Joseph Campbell, concepts such as sacred space, axis mundi, symbolism and visual and body experience will be explored, defending the argument that architecture, as built and petrified environment, enables the spiritual transformation of the individual psyche and the collective unconscious of Being. Though the idealized architecture project, located at the destination of the spiritual man’s journey, using concepts of light, silence, shadow, fire and water, it is intended to seek the lost spirituality by the modern world and revitalize the genius loci of the sacred place, where sacred manifestations took place, and where Francisco, Jacinta and Lúcia, the three little shepherds of Fátima, walked, paying due homage to their cultural heritage and the city’s heritage. The final project thus intends to develop a Pilgrimage Architecture, which can be interpreted as the materialization of meaning that the pilgrim seeks through the walk. Thus, the Pilgrimage Architecture comes to incorporate the sacred and divine symbolism for the realization of the architectural result, a sacred museum that celebrates the cultural and historical heritage of the of the sanctuary city of Fátima.
