In contemporary times, families are going through a structural change in its arrangement. The rise of blended families in Portugal brings to light a new reality in need of research, both in what concerns the role of stressful events associated to this kind of families as well as a need of shedding light on the way relations influence the family components of a given arrangement. With this reality in mind, the present study aims to increasing the knowledge on the way family dynamics unfold, in situations of remarriage, attending in particular to the role of economic pressure and marital satisfaction in exposure of children to conflict. This study encompasses 294 research participants whereas 122 are about to get remarried and 172 are fully married. The following instruments were used: O’Leary-Porter Scale- OPS (to assess children’s exposure to conflict); Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale” (to assess marital satisfaction); economic pressure was evaluated by using three indicators, as described by Conger and colleagues (1992, 1999). The research shows a negative, moderate correlation between marital satisfaction and exposure of children to conflict. When it comes to economic pressure (preoccupations and financial difficulties) the results show a negative, moderate correlation with marital satisfaction as well as a positive, moderate correlation with children exposure to parental conflict.
