Abstract(s)
futuras.
Taking after an integrative tradition, the Paradigmatic Complementarity Model postulates seven pairs of dialectical psychological needs (Vasco, 2009a, 2009b), with well-being as the result of need regulation, through a continuous negotiation and balancing process of the poles of each need. We have built a scale to evaluate the degree of regulation of one of these pairs, Coherence/Incoherence, grounded on the literature on thought-emotion-action coherence and real Self-ideal Self coherence. The scale was applied to 237 participants in a Web platform, together with the Portuguese version of the Mental Health Inventory, and the results on the former were related to the results on two indexes of the latter: Psychological Well-Being and Psychological Distress. Results account for the reliability of the Coherence/Incoherence Scale and the variance in the results, showing that Coherence is positively related to Psychological Well-Being and negatively related to Psychological Distress, while Incoherence is negatively related to Psychological Distress. When participants were divided into 4 groups by the results on the pair Coherence/Incoherence (fixed factor – median), the group with higher results on both poles showed higher results in Psychological Well-Being and lower results Psychological Distress than the rest of the sample. Study limitations, implications for theories of well-being and distress and for the psychotherapeutic practice are discussed, and further research is suggested.
