Abstract(s)
Based on the analysis of the latest data on the evolution of the world economy, we discuss the reasons for the persistence of the difficulties in sustainably recovering growth rates, particularly in the euro area, more than a decade after the outbreak of the 2008-2009 crisis. We discuss the nature of this global economic crisis, its impact at the European regional level, the emergence of what we called the identity crisis of the European integration project, the inefficiency of the euro system as a mechanism of internal and external adjustment, and the role of non-conventional monetary policy. It is concluded that Europe needs to undertake a deep redefinition of its integration project, including the redesign of the euro system in the light of recent experience of non-conventional monetary policy. In this process, it is considered that there is an important place for Portugal, as an Atlantic European country, whose identity was formed and consolidated in the process of constitution of the global economy.
