The hospitality industry has faced a fast grown in the last decade, leading to a consequent increase in employability. However, despite this growth, the working conditions for employees are still very precarious. In parallel with the development of the hospitality industry, there is a need for skilled and competent staff, such as hospitality students with specific skills. However, students' perceptions of the working conditions are negatively affected as they progress through their studies and gain professional experience. The main purpose of this study was to understand what influence the working conditions of the hospitality industry have on the hospitality students. Based on the analysis of statistical data from a survey applied to 130 university students from the Estoril School of Hospitality and Tourism, we intended to analyze the students motivations to choose a career in hospitality, their prospects relating to the working conditions of the hospitality industry, as well as their position on the HRM performance within the organizations and the sector. It is concluded that although the working conditions are considered as unattractive and as the main reason for abandoning the sector, the students show intention to remain in the hospitality industry as future professionals. However, talent retention implies a long-term improvement of working conditions. It is also concluded that HRM has responsibilities in order to contribute to the working conditions improvement and to change students' perceptions regarding the image and reputation of the sector.
